The busiest time for a fitness club is just after Christmas but many people stop attending within a few months so if you join a club you want to make sure they will motivate you enough to keep coming back. Before you choose you first need to decide what your priority is and make sure that it suits your needs and goals. However, there are matters to think about in regard to the type of gym you need to look for, before you join the gym of your choice. Many people underestimate the need for a club close to where they work or live because traveling distance/time play an important aspect of how frequently you attend.

Having a decent well qualified instructor is the next most important as a good instructor will encourage you to not only attend but to keep the fitness training up. He or she will need to know if you have any specific needs so these can be accommodated immediately or arranged for the future. If you speak to the staff about their facilities and training programs, this will give you a good idea about the customer service level they provide. It is always convenient if the fitness club you are joining has the services of a resident dietitian or physiotherapist to help with your program.
The clubs opening times is also something worth checking because if you work unusual hours you need to know they will be open and whether the general programs on offer are what you are looking for. If your intention is to join a fitness club for the classes, see if they will let you try some before you become a member. At peak periods in many clubs you can find yourself waiting to use the equipment so satisfy yourself that there is a sufficient number of machines for even busy times. The more modern fitness facilities available these days are world apart from training equipment a few years ago; machines are much safer and easier to use but look out for damaged or broken machines as these should really be fixed within a week.
Never pass up the opportunity to attend a club function if you are invited before you join as it is surprising who you can meet and you might even find a training buddy. Eventually, whether you join or not will be down to the cost of membership but don’t forget to see if they have and other charges that are not immediately apparent. Before you make your final decision, check a few other fitness clubs that are local as well as there is nothing worse that finding another, better club after you have already paid the membership on another. There is no rush so don’t choose the first club that comes your way and steer clear of clubs that continue to hassle you about membership as there is no excuse for this type of behavior.
